Karen and her friends were at Pops when she got a text from Sidney asking her to meet him outside. She told her friends she’d be back and left to meet him. Karen saw Sidney over by the side of the building waiting for her.
“Hey, why didn’t you just come in?” Karen asked as she approached him but Sidney moved away from her. “What’s going on Sid?”
“This isn’t working the way I thought it would. I think we need to slow things down and take a break from each other.”
Karen didn’t say anything but she just watched Sidney’s face as he spoke. He never really looked at her as he kept talking.
“Training camp is about to get under way and I’ve got a lot of things going on right now that I can’t afford to be distracted by anyone. I think its best that we don’t see each other for awhile until things settle down and the season really gets going. I’m sorry, but it’s what needs to happen right now.”
Sidney was expecting Karen to yell or argue with what he said, but when he finally did look at her he wasn’t expecting for what she did do.
Karen was looking down at the ground when Sidney said the last part. She was more willing herself not to cry than truly listening but the gist of it was he was breaking up with her. There was nothing she really could say or do to change his mind and all she could muster out was “fine”. It was barely audible but Sidney heard her. Karen didn’t say anything else nor did she want to stay to hear anything else from him so she turned around and walked back into Pops.
Sidney stood there and couldn’t believe she didn’t fight him on his decision. He wanted to know what she was thinking but the fact still remained…he hurt her. Sidney wanted to go inside and explain why he had to do this but deep down, he knew Karen already knew. He knew if he approached it differently he wouldn’t have been able to break up with her because he still loved her. Sidney walked to his car and headed home.
Karen had made it back inside and to the table with her friends. They asked if Sidney was joining them and she told them what happened. Karen figured it was best to play it that he needed time to get his head straight for the season and said they would still see each other and that she understood that Sidney needed to concentrate on everything. Karen hid her true feelings well enough infront of her friends, but when she got home it would be another story.
A few days later Karen was on the porch when she called Stacy. She needed some advice and knew she could help.
“Hello.”
“Hey girl, got time to talk?”
“For my best friend always, what’s going on?”
“Sid and I broke up well actually he broke it off with me.”
“Kiki I am so sorry. How are you handling it?”
“Not good” as tears started to form in her eyes “I thought we were perfect together you know. He made me happy again.”
“I know he did sweetie. We all saw it, the love between you two. Did he give you a reason?”
“Yeah he did, he said he needed some space right now to focus on training camp and the upcoming season.”
“Um, if he wanted space, why did he have to break up with you? You only saw each other on the weekends anyway.”
“Exactly and that got me thinking to when I went to visit him this summer. His parents practically gave me the same speech and how I should back off so he doesn’t ruin his career.”
“They actually said that to you?”
“That and other things basically I am no good for their son and they were very vocal in telling me.”
“Where was Sid when they were doing this?”
“Sometimes he was there, he was in another room at other times. I just don’t get it Stac, Sid said it himself that even if they didn’t approve we weren’t going to worry about what they thought and just be together. Apparently he didn’t mean it.”
“Didn’t he leave his dad at the airport to spend your birthday with you?”
“Yes.”
“His parents probably filled his head after you left and he’s taking the easy way out to get them off his back. Sidney will come around girl, just let him have this now and he’ll come back to you when the season settles down.”
“I hope you’re right.”
As she was on the phone, she saw Sidney jog past but was on the other side of the street. Karen looked away and tried to finish her conversation.
Sidney made his way back towards Mario’s when he saw Karen was still out on the porch. It looked like she was on the phone. It had been a few days since the night at Pops when he broke it off with her. He went against his better judgment and headed towards Karen’s house.
Karen saw Sidney coming towards her “Stac, can I call you back in a little bit?”
“Sure, I’ll be home all night. Talk to you later.”
“Bye” Karen hung up and put her cell phone in her pocket as she stood up when Sidney came up on the porch “hey.”
“Hey, got a minute?”
“Actually I don’t.” Karen walked passed him only to be stopped when Sidney put his hand on the screen door so Karen couldn’t open it. “What do you want Sid?”
“I just want to talk.”
“What else could you possibly have to say to me?”
“From your reaction the other night I think I need to explain why I had to do it.”
“Then explain it because I don’t understand any of this.”
“It was just the easiest way I knew to tell you and not hurt you.”
“Is that how your parents saw it?” Karen saw the expression on Sidney’s face change. “You channel your parents really well there. Did any of that actually come from you?”
“Maybe some of what they said is true.”
“Really, did I ever pressure you about anything that we both weren’t ready for?”
“No.”
“Did I ever make it seem like I wanted anything from you?”
“No.”
“Did I ever give you the impression that being with you was anything more than just wanting to be with you?”
“No.”
“Then I don’t know if I will ever understand it but if this was truly YOUR decision than I will try.”
Sidney didn’t respond with words instead he lightly pushed Karen up against the screen door and kissed her. He deepened the kiss and Karen wrapped her hands around his neck and played with his hair. Sidney broke the kiss and put his forehead to hers “I’m sorry but this is what I need right now.” His kissed her once more and then left.
Karen stood there stunned for a minute before she headed inside. She shut the door and the tears fell. All her anger from the past few days came out as she picked up the vase on the table by the door and threw it making it shatter. She fell to the floor crying hysterically realizing it was indeed over with Sidney.
A week had gone past and the Pens would be playing their first preseason game against Tampa Bay. Next week the players and coaches would be heading to Sweden to start the season against the Ottawa Senators for two games. Sidney had asked Karen to go when the families went over when they were together but she decided it was best if she hadn’t.
During the summer Karen had found out that Rick took the Assistant Coach position with Tampa Bay and knew he’d be in for the game.
Karen’s friends had come up early so they could go to an early dinner before heading to the arena. They could sense something was bothering her.
“What is wrong girl? You are usually more excited for a hockey game.” Diane asked
“I know, I guess I just have a lot on my mind. I am excited about the game and when the puck drops I will be into it I swear.”
“NO, no, no. Something is definitely going on. Spill it?” Sheril said getting a laugh out of her.
“Rick’s in town tonight” Karen said matter-of-factly.
“How the hell is he in town?”
“He is now one of the assistant coaches with the Lightning. I haven’t seen or heard from him in 12 years. I don’t know how it’s going to hit me when I do finally see him.”
That was all that was said as their food came. They continued to talk about random things during dinner and afterwards when they made their way to the arena. When they got to the arena, there weren’t many people which for a preseason game was understandable. The girls watched some of the players come in and Karen was thankful that Sidney was already there when she got there and didn’t see him. A few minutes later, they saw the bus pull in and realized it was the Lightning players. They watched them pile out of the bus and a lump caught in Karen’s throat when she saw Rick step off.
“Damn girl, the man still looks smokin’ hot.”
“Thanks Sheril, I didn’t notice” she said with a hint of sarcasm.
“She’s right though, coaching seems to agree with him.”
Karen just laughed it off and shook the thoughts out of her head. They stayed there watching until the doors opened.
Meanwhile inside the arena…
Rick was walking out of the visitor’s locker room and spotted an old friend.
“Mario” he said as he saw him walking down the hallway “how have you been?”
“Good actually, how was the move to Tampa?”
“It’s been great actually. Going to miss coaching beside Gretz, but change is always good.”
“Well you need to do what’s right for you.”
“Don’t I know it. How are Nathalie and the kids?”
“They are great as always. Maybe one time during the regular season you can stop for dinner before a game.”
“I’d like that. Um, have you heard from or seen Karen lately?”
“Actually, I have. She’s living in her parents’ house down the street from me. I’ve seen a good bit of her for the last couple months. She should be here tonight since she has season tickets.”
“Same seats as when we were dating?”
“I believe so. When she left with you, she kept her seats but let friends use them so she wouldn’t lose them. She’s probably there now if you want I can send someone to get her for you.”
“If you don’t mind, I would like to see her.”
Mario just smiled at his friend and found one of the security guys to go find Karen.
Karen was sitting in her seat with Sheril talking when one of the security guys found her and asked her to come with him. Sheril gave her a look and mouthed “Sid” before she got up and left. As they walked down to the locker rooms, Karen wondered if it was Sidney that wanted to see her but as she got closer she found it was someone else.
“Hey beautiful.”
“Hey Rick. I heard you were with Tampa now.”
“Yeah, needed a change.”
“Looks like the change agrees with you. You look good.”
“Thanks. You still look great, of course you always did.”
“You’re still the charmer I see, but thank you.” Karen saw the guys start to leave the locker room for warm ups “I think I’m going to let you go so you can get what you need done.”
“With the guys heading out to the ice, why don’t we head in to talk?”
Karen was hesitant at first, but went inside the locker room with him and sat down on one of the benches.
“So, what could we possibly have to talk about?” she said with a small laugh.
“I think we have a lot to talk about.”
Karen looked directly at him “you really want to get into this now?”
“I’m sorry how things ended with us, I really am. I never wanted to hurt you like that.”
“Well you did” she said softly looking at the floor. “I changed my life for you and it really didn’t seem to matter to you.”
“I had a lot going on after being traded to LA and I thought having you there with me would have made it feel like nothing changed. But when everything started to go I told myself to not take it out on you because I didn’t want to hurt you.”
“Yeah because shutting me out was so much better” Karen said getting up “I knew something was wrong and everytime I tried to get you to open up to me, you’d shut me out more. I was there for you but you didn’t see it that way.”
“I know and I’m sorry. If I could turn back time to fix everything I would, but I can’t. What’s done is done, you left and I had to kick myself everyday for being so stupid for letting you go.”
“You let me go? That’s funny considering I didn’t think you cared that I left.”
“Well if you would have waited until I got back from our road trip, I would have cared.”
“What are you talking about?”
“I realized how much of an ass I was being and while I was gone I had every intention of coming back and begging you to forgive me for everything. But when I got back you were already gone.”
“You know if you would have called me to tell me this, I would’ve stayed around but even now with everything that happened those last few months I don’t think our relationship was repairable.” Karen said as tears started to form in her eyes.
“Because of the baby?” he said getting up and walking over to her.
Karen looked up at him and was about to say something when she heard the guys coming back in from warm ups. She wiped under her eyes and stepped back from him “I think I need to go.”
Karen walked out of the locker room and down the hall with Rick behind her. He grabbed her arm to stop her short of the Pens locker room.
“Meet me after the game tonight. We need to finish this.”
“Aren’t you guys flying out tonight?”
“Not until tomorrow morning. Please, we can get something to eat maybe a couple drinks and finish what we started.”
“Ok. I’ll meet you outside after the game” Karen said and walked down the hallway. As she did, she saw some of the players coming towards her. Karen smiled at them and told them good luck but then she saw Sidney heading towards her. Karen’s smile faded and she looked away as she passed him. Sidney stopped and watched her walk away from him knowing that all he wanted to do was run after her. He went into the locker room and sat down wondering if he did the right thing. Karen got back to her seat and told the girls about the talk with Rick and him wanting to meet after the game.
“Are you seriously crazy girl? Why are you putting yourself through this again?”
“I’m not putting myself through anything. The way I left so many things were unresolved between us, I need closure with him.”
“If that’s what she needs, then that’s what she needs to do. I’m just glad we brought both cars.”
“Thanks guys” Karen said smiling at them.
After the game, Karen said goodbye to her friends and waited for Rick to come out. She saw Ryan coming out and he motioned for her. She walked over and hugged him.
“Hey hop-a-long, how’s your foot?”
“It’s doing good. The boot is way more comfortable than crutches though.”
“Well at least you’re not stuck at home going crazy.”
“True. Are you waiting for Sid?”
Karen figured he didn’t say anything to them and wondered if she should, but he broke up with her so why shouldn’t she. “Actually I am waiting for Rick Tocchet.”
“That’s right, you two used to date.”
“Yeah, we’re going to catch up before he leaves tomorrow.”
“Is Sid going with you?”
“Um, Sidney and I aren’t together right now. He broke it off with me before training camp.”
Ryan could see the hurt and sadness in her eyes “I’m so sorry Karen. Did he say why?”
Before Karen got to answer Rick came out and walked over to them. “Hey.”
“You ready to go?”
“Yeah, Rick this is Ryan Whitney. Ryan meet Rick Tocchet.”
“Is nice to meet you” Ryan said as he shook his hand.
“You too, what happened?” Rick asked pointing to his foot.
“I had surgery and I’ll be out probably until December or January.”
“But he’ll be back better than ever though.”
“Stop it, you’re making me blush. You guys go catch up, I’ll talk to you later Karen.”
“Alright Whit, take it easy ok?”
“Ok mom. It was nice to meet you Rick.”
“You too.” Rick said as they went their separate ways.
“Where do you want to go?” Karen asked.
“How about the hotel? We can get something to eat and talk in the restaurant.”
“Sounds good, besides my car is in the parking garage there.”
“You always did park there.”
“It was always easier that way.”
They smiled at each other and continued their walk across the street and down to the hotel. When they went in, they headed to the restaurant and sat towards the back for some privacy.
“I guess this means we have to talk like civilized people.”
“I guess so.”
The waitress came over and Rick ordered their drinks. When she came back, she took their orders.
“My beautiful date will have the Grilled Chicken Caesar Salad with the dressing on the side and I will have the Turkey Club on Wheat.”
The waitress left and Karen sat there smiling at him “you remembered.”
“I still remember a lot of things about you.” Rick said as he reached for her hand to hold it.
Karen looked at their hands together and was going to pull away but decided not to since it felt nice. “You shouldn’t hold on to all those memories.”
“Why not? There were some good times Karen, you have to admit that.”
“We did have fun, especially when you won the cup in ’92.”
“Of course, I also remember what we did with the cup when I had it for the day.”
“Please tell me you’ve never showed those pictures to anyone?”
“Maybe one or two, but it wasn’t my fault. They found them during a party one night but don’t worry, I never told them your name or who you were.”
“I still can’t believe you talked me into taking that picture.”
“It was a picture for me of you and the Stanley Cup I had to make it memorable.”
“Yeah it was memorable alright. I was wearing your jersey and had it rolled up very, very high, a thong and wearing skates. I don’t think anyone would look at the cup with me standing there beside it.”
“It’s one of my favorite pictures of you.”
“I’m sure it is you perv” Karen said laughing.
Soon, their food came and they continued to reminisce about the past. After they ate, Rick paid for the food and they headed upstairs to his room against Karen’s better judgment.
“Mind if I change clothes?”
“No go ahead.”
A few minutes later, Rick came out in a pair of shorts and a t-shirt. Karen was standing by the window which had a view of the arena. She could see the player’s lot and saw a couple cars still there, but Sidney’s was gone.
“Do you want anything to drink?”
“No, I’m good.”
“You ok?”
“Yeah, I’ve just got a lot going on with work.”
“I don’t think that’s it. Something else is wrong.”
“I wasn’t sure how seeing you tonight was going to make me feel. I was actually debating the entire game if I wanted to do this.”
“Do you really hate me that much Karebear?”
“I haven’t heard that nickname in a long time” Karen smiled when he called her that “and I don’t hate you Rick. I just have all these unresolved feelings about you that I held onto for 12 years. I mean we were friends before we got together and as much as I hated losing you, I hated losing my friend too.”
“I know, I did too but we did love each other right? I mean before everything that happened.”
“Before and after everything Rick” Karen couldn’t stop the tears that wanted to fall and she let them. Rick walked over to her and put his arms around her. Karen fell into them and once again let the feelings she had for him surface.
After a few minutes that seemed longer, Karen looked up at Rick. There was nothing more perfect than when he captured her lips in a kiss. The kiss got a little more heated and intense the longer they were locked together. As they were still attached at the lips, Rick moved them over to the bed. When Karen felt the bed hit her legs, she kneeled up on the bed and laid down bringing Rick with her. Soon clothes were discarded and Karen felt the familiar weight on top of her. Rick moved inbetween her legs and entered her in one swift motion. Karen’s mind was racing with all the feelings she had for him as he moved inside of her. The faster he went and the harder he got with each thrust instantly brought Karen over the edge. She moaned out and her fingernails went deep into his back. After a couple more thrusts, Rick came hard and filled her up with all he had to offer. He collapsed on top of her and Karen just held on to him. Rick propped himself up and looked at Karen before leaning in to kiss her. When they broke apart, they smiled at each other as Rick rolled off her and brought her to him. They fell asleep not too long afterwards.
The next morning, Karen woke up to the phone ringing and realized that she wasn’t at home and it wasn’t Sidney beside her. She saw Rick answer it and then get out of bed heading to the bathroom. Karen assumed it was the wake up service and knew he needed to go. When she heard the shower start up, she looked around the room and a calm came over her. She noticed all the bad feelings she had for Rick were gone. A few moments later, Rick came out of the bathroom.
“Morning beautiful.”
“Morning.”
“You ok with how things turned out from last night?”
“Yeah I am. I didn’t really expect that to happen but it was like…”
“Like it needed to happen as if we closed the book on us.”
“That’s what it feels like exactly.” Karen smiled up at him and got a reassuring smile back.
Rick finished getting ready and Karen wrapped herself in the sheet and started to get dressed.
“Ah, you may want to hold off for a few minutes unless you want to be seen leaving here by all the players.”
“I didn’t think of that.”
“Why don’t you stay and grab a shower before you leave. If you don’t want to leave right away, you have until 11a.”
“Thanks, but I may head out after I know you guys are gone.”
They stood there and just stared at each other until Rick closed the gap between them and kissed her. The kiss still had heat but when they pulled apart they both knew it was the goodbye kiss they needed.
“Maybe when we come back during the season, do you think two friends can get together for dinner?”
“I don’t think I’d want it any other way.”
Rick hugged and kissed her one last time before he left. Karen sat down on the bed and a few tears fell. She looked over on the dresser and saw a shirt. Getting up and walking over to it, Karen picked it up and noticed the Lightning logo on the front and ‘coaching staff’ was on the back. She smiled holding it up to her chest and Karen knew she would be ok. She got her shower and left soon after.
When she got home Karen tried to be quiet but as soon as she turned around her friends were staring directly at her.
“Oh my god you did, didn’t you?” Diane asked with her arms crossed.
“Gee mom, I’m not sure I can crack your code. Do you want to send the other kids out of the room so we can have the birds and the bees talk?” Karen said laughing.
“Did you?”
“Yes we did.”
“Girl, what are you doing to yourself?”
“It wasn’t like that. We were talking and it got emotional. He hugged me and then he kissed me. One thing led to another and we ended up in bed. It was so amazing the man hasn’t lost anything in that department.”
“Well that’s good to know but how did you guys end it?”
“With a hug and a kiss goodbye and as we looked at each other this morning, we both knew.”
“Knew what?”
“That I have my friend back” Karen smiled as she said it. “You guys might not understand but I needed this to close that chapter of my life. There were no hard feelings, actually no feelings of any kind. It’s over.”
Karen went upstairs to change her clothes leaving her three friends baffled at what just happened.

Chapter 61
Karen had Sidney take her to the Olive Garden for dinner. They were able to request a booth in the back room away from mostly everyone. The waiter came over and took their drink order. When he returned, Sidney ordered for both of them and he left leaving them alone.
"Are you still mad at me?" Sidney asked reaching for her hand and holding it.
"No. I know Media Day is a big deal."
"Thank you for understanding baby."
"You still should have told me earlier though."
"I know and I will make it up to you I promise."
"Since you'll be in New York now, you still coming with me for the 11th?"
"Of course I am. I wouldn't let you go through that alone."
"Thanks."
"When would we be leaving?"
"Late afternoon on the 10th and then we'll come back early on the 12th. That way you can get a work out in before we leave and after we come back if you want."
"Sounds like a plan to me."
Soon their food came and they continued to talk while they ate. After they were done, Sidney suggested a movie. Karen agreed and they got in the car and drove the short distance to the new movie theater that had just opened up. They decided on The Dark Night and Sidney paid for the tickets and they went in. Karen went to the bathroom while Sidney went to get their seats. Since the movie had been out for awhile, their wasn't many people there. The fact it was Labor day could have had something to do with it to. Karen walked into the theater and looked for Sidney. She smiled when she saw him a the very top row and shook her head as she walked up to him.
"Um, why are we so far up?"
Sidney put his arm around her "more private the better."
"Are we really going to watch the movie?"
"Most of it" Sidney whispered in her ear.
The rest of the people came in and the previews started...so did Sidney. Karen felt his hot breath on her neck and soon his lips were there as well. Karen leaned into his mouth, biting her lip so her moans didn't come out. Sidney's lips trailed up to her chin and Karen turned her head so her lips met his. The kiss lasted for a few minutes before Karen heard the start of the movie and broke away. The arms of the chairs moved and Sidney moved it up so he could pull Karen closer to him as they watched the movie. When the movie ended, Sidney took her hand in his and they made their way out.
Before Karen realized it, they were back at Maggie's and Sidney would be telling her goodbye. They stood on the porch in an embrace as their lips once again found each other. Sidney didn't rush the kiss but he knew Karen needed to get some sleep for work tomorrow.
"I better go so you can get to bed" Sidney said breaking the kiss.
"Yeah, I know. You sure you can't stay for a 4 hour nap and head up when I leave at 3a?"
"You know I'd love to, it's just easier if I head up now."
Karen picked up on how it was strange he didn't want to stay. Usually he would jump at the chance. She played it off and kissed him "I love you and I'm glad your back."
"I love you too baby. I'll call you when I get back in a couple of days."
"Ok. Have fun."
"I'll try." He kissed her again and then started to walk off the porch "night baby."
"Night stud." Karen watched him leave but still couldn't shake the feeling something was going on that he wasn't telling her. She finally went inside and got ready for bed.
A couple days have past and Karen hadn't heard from Sidney. She was surfing the internet and saw the video about Media Day. She played it and watched as certain players partook in photo shoots. All of the sudden, Sidney popped on the screen and was being interviewed. Karen smiled at how good he looked dressed up and wished she had heard from him. She sent texts and called him but nothing came back. A couple more days past and it was now the 7th. Being Sunday, Karen was watching her NASCAR race and going over some emails when her cell phone rang.
"Hello."
"Hey girl."
"What's up Sheril? Haven't talk to you in a few days."
"I know, been busy getting the kids back to school and into the swing of things. Natalie told me you were finally going to New York for the 11th and both her and Diane has the 10th off. We were hoping the four of us could get together at Pops Tuesday night."
"I like the sound of that."
"I could come up there with you after you're done work on Tuesday and then head home with Nat and Diane on Wednesday morning before you leave."
"Sounds good to me."
"Is Sidney going with you?"
"He's suppose to."
"Something worng?"
"He came back on Labor Day to surprise me but then left again to be a part of Media Day on the 3rd, but I haven't heard from him since he left."
"I'm sure he just got preoccupied."
"Yeah, maybe."
"Alright, I got to go. I'll see you Tuesday about 1p."
"Ok, bye.
They hung up and Karen thought about what she said. But even if Sidney got preoccupied, he still wouldn't ignore her calls or texts. Karen shut down her computer and concentrated more on the race.
Tuesday came and so did 1pm. Sheril met Karen at Cabela's and they headed to her house in Pittsburgh. They still had a couple hours until Diane and Natalie got off work and would meet them. Karen decided to get her shower and get ready. Sheril got on her computer while she did and couldn't believe what she saw. A little bit later, Karen came downstairs and saw Sheril on the computer.
"Anything interesting?"
"Actually there is" Sheril said bringing up the page that showed a picture of Sidney "I at least know where Sidney was on Sunday."
Karen saw the picture open up and there he was "where was this taken?"
"Apparently he went to the US Open with Mario. This was taken Sunday" Sheril said looking to her friend.
"But it still doesn't tell me where he was from the 3rd till the 7th."
"Why don't you call or text him and see if he'll come join us tonight?"
"I did before I got my shower. Haven't heard anything back yet."
"Well there's still time. I'm going to go get ready." Sheril left her and went upstairs. While she was up there, Natalie and Diane pulled up and they all sat around for a little bit until it got a little later to head to Pops. It was nearing 8pm when they were on their way and when Karen drove past Mario's house, she saw Sidney's Range Rover in the driveway. She thought that if this was the end, he would at least tell her. She decided to not think about him and have fun with her friends.
Wednesday morning came and her friends left. Karen was getting her things packed when their was a knock at the door. She answered it to reveal Sidney on the other side.
"Hey" he said a little cautiously.
"Hey yourself."
"Do you have a minute so we could talk?"
"I'm actually getting packed. Are you ready to go?"
"That's what I need to talk to you about. I can't go with you. The Penguins have a few things planned before training camp starts and I need to be here the next couple of days."
"Fine" Karen said then started up the steps.
"I'm obligated to be here when they need me."
"I guess I'm not part of any obligations to you am I? Do you know what this trip was about Sid? It was about spending time with you before the season starts and you get too busy. It was about needing you with me to face a day that scarred me. It was about wanting the person I love to be there with me, for you to be there with me."
"Karen wait. I'm sorry."
"I'm sorry too. I need to finish packing" Karen turned and walked into her room, slamming the door shut. She leaned up against the door and fell to the floor crying.
Sidney stood there for a minute. He wanted to go upstairs after her but he couldn't seem to make his feet move. He cursed himself for doing this to her, but he had to. Sidney took one last look up the steps before he walked out the door.
Karen took a deep breath and wiped her eyes. She got up and finished packing. A couple hours later, Karen was getting her bag in the car and was headed to the airport. After she got to the airport, she parked her car and got out, going to check in. Karen explained that her travelling partner was able to come and checked her bag. She went through security and took the tram to her gate. As she waited to be called to board, Karen figured out why he did what he did...his dad.
A few minutes later, Karen was boarding the plane and was soon off to New York. She landed after an hour and a half and got a taxi to her hotel room. After she checked in, Karen went to her room and looked around. She pulled back the curtains to see the skyline, but saw what else was missing.
"Of all the luck" she said to herself. The view was not only the skyline missing the World Trade Towers but it showed a perfect shot of Ground Zero. Karen would have given anything to feel Sidney's arms around her right now as the tears welled up in her eyes. She closed the curtains back up again and went to order some room service. This wasn't a sightseeing vacation and now that Sidney wasn't with her, she planned on staying in the hotel room except for going out tomorrow.
Thursday morning September 11th...Karen had gotten up early and got dressed. She made the short walk to Ground Zero and stood on the sidewalk overlooking the site. She wanted to be there at the time when the second plane would have gone into the second tower...the plane that had her parents in it. Karen could see all the people lined up and could hear the names being called of everyone that died that day. She tuned it out and just looked up at the sky, picturing what she saw that day on tv. Karen let the tears fall freely and didn't try to hide the hurt she was feeling.
"Are you going to be ok Miss?" the woman beside her asked.
"Yeah, I will be."
"It's a sad day for everyone."
Karen turned and looked at the woman who was about mid 40s "my parents were on the second plane that hit the second tower. They were coming back from vacation and I never got to say goodbye."
"I'm sorry dear, but that's what today is about to get the chance to say goodbye."
"I know. I've avoided coming here on this day for so long, but something brought me here this year."
"Maybe it was your parents."
"Maybe it was" she said and offered a sad smile to her.
"It'll be ok dear."
"Thanks."
As Karen stood there, she felt her phone go off and she pulled it from her pocket and looked at the caller ID. When she saw Sidney's name appear, she hit the ignore button and put it back. She stayed there for another hour just staring at the site. Her phone had gone off about 6 more times and each time it was Sidney, each time she ignored it. After Karen had gotten back to the hotel, she ordered up some food and gotten her shower. When her food came, she ate while watching tv and just looked at her phone on the nightstand everytime it went off, not making a move to get it. She got done eating and went to stand in front of her window looking at the well-lit site.
"I don't know if you guys can hear me, but I came to see you today. I know you know I always came before or after today, but something had me come on the actual day this year. I've been missing you guys more and more. The longer the years go by, the harder it gets not having you around. My job is going good. I thought my love life was going good but it's taking a turn for the worse and I don't know what to do. You'd be happy dad, I'm dating a Penguin player again. I just don't know what's going on with him. He comes back from the off season and he's changed. I put my heart out on the line and its getting hurt again. I don't know what to do. I wish you could be here to help me through this. After 7 years and I still need my mom and dad. I love you both very much." Karen kissed her fingers and placed them on the window before closing the curtains and crawling into bed. She picked up her cell phone and saw the missed calls and missed texts. There was no voicemails to go through so she read all 13 text messages....all from Sidney.
"Please call me back."
"Baby, I'm sorry."
"Talk to me, I'm worried about you."
The rest were the same and all were apologizing. Truth was, Karen didn't want to hear it, she wanted him there with her...she needed him here with her. She scrolled through the rest of the messages and saw the last one...I love you. Karen put her phone back on the nightstand and turned off the light, crying herself to sleep.
On Friday, Karen left New York and headed back to Pittsburgh and she planned to stay at the house over the weekend. Saturday came and Karen hadn't heard from Sidney, of course she didn't try to get in touch with him either. She was hurt that he didn't go with her to New York when she needed him. Her cell phone rang and Karen answered it when she saw it was Natalie. She told her that she was getting Diane and Sheril and heading up there to cheer her up. Karen tried to protest but she wouldn't hear of it. An hour later, her friends were there and they headed to Pops for some drinks. Karen had text Sidney and told her where she would be if he wanted to join them, but she wasn't about to hold her breath waiting.
"Are you still mad at me?" Sidney asked reaching for her hand and holding it.
"No. I know Media Day is a big deal."
"Thank you for understanding baby."
"You still should have told me earlier though."
"I know and I will make it up to you I promise."
"Since you'll be in New York now, you still coming with me for the 11th?"
"Of course I am. I wouldn't let you go through that alone."
"Thanks."
"When would we be leaving?"
"Late afternoon on the 10th and then we'll come back early on the 12th. That way you can get a work out in before we leave and after we come back if you want."
"Sounds like a plan to me."
Soon their food came and they continued to talk while they ate. After they were done, Sidney suggested a movie. Karen agreed and they got in the car and drove the short distance to the new movie theater that had just opened up. They decided on The Dark Night and Sidney paid for the tickets and they went in. Karen went to the bathroom while Sidney went to get their seats. Since the movie had been out for awhile, their wasn't many people there. The fact it was Labor day could have had something to do with it to. Karen walked into the theater and looked for Sidney. She smiled when she saw him a the very top row and shook her head as she walked up to him.
"Um, why are we so far up?"
Sidney put his arm around her "more private the better."
"Are we really going to watch the movie?"
"Most of it" Sidney whispered in her ear.
The rest of the people came in and the previews started...so did Sidney. Karen felt his hot breath on her neck and soon his lips were there as well. Karen leaned into his mouth, biting her lip so her moans didn't come out. Sidney's lips trailed up to her chin and Karen turned her head so her lips met his. The kiss lasted for a few minutes before Karen heard the start of the movie and broke away. The arms of the chairs moved and Sidney moved it up so he could pull Karen closer to him as they watched the movie. When the movie ended, Sidney took her hand in his and they made their way out.
Before Karen realized it, they were back at Maggie's and Sidney would be telling her goodbye. They stood on the porch in an embrace as their lips once again found each other. Sidney didn't rush the kiss but he knew Karen needed to get some sleep for work tomorrow.
"I better go so you can get to bed" Sidney said breaking the kiss.
"Yeah, I know. You sure you can't stay for a 4 hour nap and head up when I leave at 3a?"
"You know I'd love to, it's just easier if I head up now."
Karen picked up on how it was strange he didn't want to stay. Usually he would jump at the chance. She played it off and kissed him "I love you and I'm glad your back."
"I love you too baby. I'll call you when I get back in a couple of days."
"Ok. Have fun."
"I'll try." He kissed her again and then started to walk off the porch "night baby."
"Night stud." Karen watched him leave but still couldn't shake the feeling something was going on that he wasn't telling her. She finally went inside and got ready for bed.
A couple days have past and Karen hadn't heard from Sidney. She was surfing the internet and saw the video about Media Day. She played it and watched as certain players partook in photo shoots. All of the sudden, Sidney popped on the screen and was being interviewed. Karen smiled at how good he looked dressed up and wished she had heard from him. She sent texts and called him but nothing came back. A couple more days past and it was now the 7th. Being Sunday, Karen was watching her NASCAR race and going over some emails when her cell phone rang.
"Hello."
"Hey girl."
"What's up Sheril? Haven't talk to you in a few days."
"I know, been busy getting the kids back to school and into the swing of things. Natalie told me you were finally going to New York for the 11th and both her and Diane has the 10th off. We were hoping the four of us could get together at Pops Tuesday night."
"I like the sound of that."
"I could come up there with you after you're done work on Tuesday and then head home with Nat and Diane on Wednesday morning before you leave."
"Sounds good to me."
"Is Sidney going with you?"
"He's suppose to."
"Something worng?"
"He came back on Labor Day to surprise me but then left again to be a part of Media Day on the 3rd, but I haven't heard from him since he left."
"I'm sure he just got preoccupied."
"Yeah, maybe."
"Alright, I got to go. I'll see you Tuesday about 1p."
"Ok, bye.
They hung up and Karen thought about what she said. But even if Sidney got preoccupied, he still wouldn't ignore her calls or texts. Karen shut down her computer and concentrated more on the race.
Tuesday came and so did 1pm. Sheril met Karen at Cabela's and they headed to her house in Pittsburgh. They still had a couple hours until Diane and Natalie got off work and would meet them. Karen decided to get her shower and get ready. Sheril got on her computer while she did and couldn't believe what she saw. A little bit later, Karen came downstairs and saw Sheril on the computer.
"Anything interesting?"
"Actually there is" Sheril said bringing up the page that showed a picture of Sidney "I at least know where Sidney was on Sunday."
Karen saw the picture open up and there he was "where was this taken?"
"Apparently he went to the US Open with Mario. This was taken Sunday" Sheril said looking to her friend.
"But it still doesn't tell me where he was from the 3rd till the 7th."
"Why don't you call or text him and see if he'll come join us tonight?"
"I did before I got my shower. Haven't heard anything back yet."
"Well there's still time. I'm going to go get ready." Sheril left her and went upstairs. While she was up there, Natalie and Diane pulled up and they all sat around for a little bit until it got a little later to head to Pops. It was nearing 8pm when they were on their way and when Karen drove past Mario's house, she saw Sidney's Range Rover in the driveway. She thought that if this was the end, he would at least tell her. She decided to not think about him and have fun with her friends.
Wednesday morning came and her friends left. Karen was getting her things packed when their was a knock at the door. She answered it to reveal Sidney on the other side.
"Hey" he said a little cautiously.
"Hey yourself."
"Do you have a minute so we could talk?"
"I'm actually getting packed. Are you ready to go?"
"That's what I need to talk to you about. I can't go with you. The Penguins have a few things planned before training camp starts and I need to be here the next couple of days."
"Fine" Karen said then started up the steps.
"I'm obligated to be here when they need me."
"I guess I'm not part of any obligations to you am I? Do you know what this trip was about Sid? It was about spending time with you before the season starts and you get too busy. It was about needing you with me to face a day that scarred me. It was about wanting the person I love to be there with me, for you to be there with me."

Chapter 60
Karen literally threw herself into work after she got back. She figured if she was always working, She wouldn't miss Sidney as much as she was. The rest of August went by quickly and September was right around the corner. Karen and her friends always did a countdown until training camp and this year was no different, only her countdown was for Sidney to get back to town.
Soon it was Labor Day and Karen was at work. She was working on a rack of clothes when she felt a hand on her waist and turned around startled but surprised.
“Sid? What are you doing here?” she asked hugging him.
“I got in yesterday and wanted to surprise you.”
“Well you did. I’m glad you’re back. I’ve missed you.”
“I’ve missed you too baby. How about I walk around for a little bit and let you finish up so we can go spend some time together?”
“I’d love that. I should be done in about 15 minutes so I’ll meet you where?”
“Not sure, maybe I’ll be in fishing again.”
“Ok, I’ll find you.”
Sidney kissed her quickly and left her standing by her cart. She smiled then finished up the rack and went to put her cart away and clock out.
“Is nice to see the smile has returned. I guess that hug and kiss from Sidney a few minutes ago is a big part of that.”
“Hey Diane, I didn’t know you were here today?”
“I just got in and had to return something before clocking in. I take it he just got back.”
“Yeah, he said yesterday and I was only expecting a phone call and go up to see him this weekend. But I am glad he came down.”
“And I’m sure you can’t wait to be alone with him.”
“You know me to well. I’ll call you later.”
Karen told Diane goodbye and left to go find Sidney. She headed towards fishing, but she saw a group of people by the front door and Karen noticed the Reebok hat in the middle of everyone and knew what happened. Karen walked up to the crowd and another co-worker told her who was here. She just smiled at her and tried to get Sidney to look at her direction. When he did she mouthed ‘sorry’ and he just smiled at her. Soon, the store manager came in to see what was going on. Karen grabbed him and took him aside to see if he could help Sidney.
“Do you know what’s going on Karen?”
“Um, yeah. Sidney Crosby came down to see me and I guess someone recognized him before I got here. I know he doesn’t mind signing, but could you maybe organize it better Brooke?”
“Ok everyone let’s give Mr. Crosby some room” he said getting them to spread out. “I am so sorry, if we knew you were coming we could have planned this better.”
“It’s ok, really. I don’t mind it and please, it’s Sidney.”
“Well you know the longer you stand here, the more people that will crowd around.”
“That’s true” Sidney looked over and saw Karen standing there “is it ok if I go out the employee entrance?”
“Of course not, let me walk you out.”
Sidney went to Karen and grabbed her hand so they could leave. He signed a couple of things as he walked out with Karen and the store manager.
“I’m sorry Brooke. He was here before and no one recognized him, I didn’t mean for that to happen.”
“You don’t need to apologize Karen, its fine. Sidney, it was a pleasure to meet you and whenever you want to come back, let us know and we will surely accommodate your next shopping visit.”
“Next time I come down, shopping won’t be the only reason” he said smiling at Karen.
“How long have you two been dating Karen?”
“Since April. We’ve been able to keep it quiet until now.”
“Don’t worry. If anybody inquires why he was here, it will be a surprised shopping visit and no other reason.”
“Thanks Brooke, I appreciate that.”
“No problem Karen. You are an important part of Cabela’s and this store and I will see to it that nothing gets out or rumors start for you. Go have fun and I’ll see you tomorrow. Sidney, good luck this season.”
“Thanks.”
They said goodbye and headed to Karen’s car. Sidney told her where he was parked and she drove him to his car so he could follow her down to the house. After 20 minutes, they got to the house and went in.
“So how did all that happen?” Karen asked as they sat down on the couch.
“I was looking around and next thing I knew a little kid saw me and when I started signing for him, more people clued in and just gathered around me.”
“You just can’t resist all those little kids.”
“I think it means more to them then the adults. Their faces light up and it’s special.”
“I think you’re special for doing that. It should be fun going to work tomorrow and hear all the talk.”
“I just wonder if it will come out now about us dating.”
“You know what I’m going to leave it to you. I’m fine if people know I just need to know what you want me to tell them.”
“Can you handle what will come with people knowing?”
“If you mean the backlash from your female fans, yes I can. They can say what they want but I know what’s happening between us.”
“Not only the fans, but maybe the press too.”
“It’ll be fine. Besides, I’ll only give the true story to the highest bidder” she said smiling at him.
Sidney reached into his pocket and brought out some money “what’s the rate?”
“Depends on how much information you want to know about?” Sidney pulls out a credit card and hands it to her. Karen holds it and busts out laughing. “What am I, an ATM machine?”
“Well, there is a place I would like to swipe.”
Karen smacked him on his arm “you are perverted you know that?”
Sidney leaned into her “no, I just missed you.”
“What should we do about that?”
“How about we go to your room and let me show you how much?”
Karen kissed him before getting up and walking towards her room. She looked back and saw Sidney still sitting on the couch “should I start without you or are you joining me?”
“I may need a little more persuasion.”
Karen turned completely around and grabbed the hem of her t-shirt and pulled it over her head, throwing it at Sidney before going into the bedroom. Sidney picked up the shirt and got off the couch going to the bedroom. He saw her standing by the bed waiting for him.
“So is this all I get?” holding up the shirt.
“If you want more, you need to come get more.”
Sidney threw the shirt down, shutting the door with his foot and walked over to her. He wrapped his arms around her waist, bringing his lips down to hers. Karen finds the bottom of his shirt and brings it up his chest. They broke their kiss so Karen could remove it completely. She brought her hand back down over his chest and abs, lightly touching the skin. Sidney moved her hand so he could reach down and unbutton her jeans. Karen felt his breath going down her body as he moved down to take off her jeans. Sidney placed kisses up her leg and stopped when he got to her stomach. He smiled into her skin when he heard a giggle escape her lips, realizing he was tickling her. Sidney moved higher and found his spot on her neck. Karen leaned into his mouth and put her arms around him.
“Mmm, I’ve missed what your touch and kisses do to me.”
“You haven’t felt anything yet baby.”
Sidney lifted her up and placed her on the bed. He removed his jeans and boxers before climbing on top of her.
"Um, aren't you forgetting something?" Karen asked as Sidney began his assault on her neck again.
"No, I'm getting turned on more with you just wearing your bra and panties."
"Doesn't that defeat the purpose of what we want to do?"
"Maybe not" Sidney said with a micheivous grin. He left her neck and went towards one of her breasts. He pulled the material down and kissed over it. Sidney lightly sucked on her nipple then blew cool air over it making her back arch and giving him better access. He covered her breast back up and went to do the same to the other one. After Sidney was satisfied, he kissed around her stomach before going back up and attacking her lips. While they were kissing, Karen felt Sidney's hand move to her mound and rub it over the fabric. He moved the material to one side and exposing her swollen lips to him. Sidney rubbed himself over her lips before plunging deep inside of her. Keeping her underwear on, it made it tighter for Sidney to maneuver and it turned them on more. Karen moaned out for him to go harder, which he obliged. Sidney started to pound into her hard as her fingernails scratched up his back. Sidney moaned at the pain but kept going. His thrusts got faster wanting to bring Karen over the edge. After a few minutes, he heard her breathing quicken and felt the tightness around him as Karen moaned out her pleasure. Sidney couldn't hold on any longer and came hard, spilling his seed inside her. Sidney slowed his thrusts down, making sure he was done filling her up before pulling out, but he didn't get off of her.

"Good" Karen said bringing her hand up to his cheek "I won't be able to handle being away from you again."

Sidney kissed her again before resting his head in her neck. Karen brought her hand up and curled her fingers in his hair as she closed her eyes, loving the feeling of his weight on her again. Sidney laid there, but thoughts plagued his mind from closing his eyes.
Flashback
It was the last day Sidney was at home before leaving to head back to Pittsburgh. He was having dinner at his parents' house when his dad brought up the subject of Karen and breaking it off with her...again.
"Why can't you just see I want what's best for you Sid?"
"Why couldn't you see how happy she makes me? You had dinner with her twice during the playoffs and never gave her the chance."
"I saw how happy she made you, I am not debating that. You're 21 Sid, you have your whole life ahead of you and that life is hockey."
Sidney got up from the table "maybe hockey doesn't have to be my life." He walked out of the dining room and out the door.
Troy got up and walked out after his son "Sidney wait."
"No, I am not going to hear it dad. For the past three weeks, all you did was beat it in my head to break up with her. I love her dad. You do remember what that is? You always told Tay and I stories about how in love you were with mom before you got married. I grew wanting that but hockey always came first. I've got the career in hockey, that part of my life is stable. Let me be happy outside of the arena and let me be with Karen."
"Sid, you love her and I get that, I do. Maybe if you talk to her and just until the season starts, take a break to make sure you can handle everything, if she understands she'll give you that space and be there when the season is well under way."
"I'm not promising anything dad, alright?"
"It's for the best son, you'll see."
Troy patted Sidney on the shoulder and walked back inside. Sidney got in his car and went back to his house to finish packing, with his dad's thoughts still swarming around his head.
End of Flashback
A couple hours later, Karen woke up with Sidney still on top of her. She began to rub his back and it made Sidney start to stir. He came to and looked at Karen "sorry baby, didn't mean to fall asleep."
"That's ok, it was nice."
"Yeah it was. Maybe we should get up and find something for dinner before I head back up to Pittsburgh."
"You're not staying with me tonight?" Karen said somewhat disappointed.
"I wasn't planning on it." Karen got out from under Sidney and went to the bathroom, shutting the door "Baby, please let me explain" he said getting up and putting on his boxers.
"Explain then" Karen said from behind the door.
"Will you come out here so I can?"
Karen opened the door and looked at Sidney "what?"
"Baby, I need to go to New York for media day on the 3rd and we leave tomorrow."
"So you can't stay tonight if you're not leaving until tomorrow why?"
"It'll just be easier. Please don't be mad about this."
"I just thought I would get more than a couple hours with you."
"We will have more time together I promise. I just need to take care of this."
"You couldn't have told me this earlier?" she said as her face softened.
"I know I should have but I didn't want to ruin this time for us to be together" he said pulling her into his arms. "We still have 6 hours until you have to go to bed that we can spend together."
"Alright, but you're taking me out to dinner."
"Fair enough baby." Sidney brought his lips to meet hers in a passionate kiss before breaking away and getting dressed to go out for dinner.
Soon it was Labor Day and Karen was at work. She was working on a rack of clothes when she felt a hand on her waist and turned around startled but surprised.
“Sid? What are you doing here?” she asked hugging him.
“I got in yesterday and wanted to surprise you.”
“Well you did. I’m glad you’re back. I’ve missed you.”
“I’ve missed you too baby. How about I walk around for a little bit and let you finish up so we can go spend some time together?”
“I’d love that. I should be done in about 15 minutes so I’ll meet you where?”
“Not sure, maybe I’ll be in fishing again.”
“Ok, I’ll find you.”
Sidney kissed her quickly and left her standing by her cart. She smiled then finished up the rack and went to put her cart away and clock out.
“Is nice to see the smile has returned. I guess that hug and kiss from Sidney a few minutes ago is a big part of that.”
“Hey Diane, I didn’t know you were here today?”
“I just got in and had to return something before clocking in. I take it he just got back.”
“Yeah, he said yesterday and I was only expecting a phone call and go up to see him this weekend. But I am glad he came down.”
“And I’m sure you can’t wait to be alone with him.”
“You know me to well. I’ll call you later.”
Karen told Diane goodbye and left to go find Sidney. She headed towards fishing, but she saw a group of people by the front door and Karen noticed the Reebok hat in the middle of everyone and knew what happened. Karen walked up to the crowd and another co-worker told her who was here. She just smiled at her and tried to get Sidney to look at her direction. When he did she mouthed ‘sorry’ and he just smiled at her. Soon, the store manager came in to see what was going on. Karen grabbed him and took him aside to see if he could help Sidney.
“Do you know what’s going on Karen?”
“Um, yeah. Sidney Crosby came down to see me and I guess someone recognized him before I got here. I know he doesn’t mind signing, but could you maybe organize it better Brooke?”
“Ok everyone let’s give Mr. Crosby some room” he said getting them to spread out. “I am so sorry, if we knew you were coming we could have planned this better.”
“It’s ok, really. I don’t mind it and please, it’s Sidney.”
“Well you know the longer you stand here, the more people that will crowd around.”
“That’s true” Sidney looked over and saw Karen standing there “is it ok if I go out the employee entrance?”
“Of course not, let me walk you out.”
Sidney went to Karen and grabbed her hand so they could leave. He signed a couple of things as he walked out with Karen and the store manager.
“I’m sorry Brooke. He was here before and no one recognized him, I didn’t mean for that to happen.”
“You don’t need to apologize Karen, its fine. Sidney, it was a pleasure to meet you and whenever you want to come back, let us know and we will surely accommodate your next shopping visit.”
“Next time I come down, shopping won’t be the only reason” he said smiling at Karen.
“How long have you two been dating Karen?”
“Since April. We’ve been able to keep it quiet until now.”
“Don’t worry. If anybody inquires why he was here, it will be a surprised shopping visit and no other reason.”
“Thanks Brooke, I appreciate that.”
“No problem Karen. You are an important part of Cabela’s and this store and I will see to it that nothing gets out or rumors start for you. Go have fun and I’ll see you tomorrow. Sidney, good luck this season.”
“Thanks.”
They said goodbye and headed to Karen’s car. Sidney told her where he was parked and she drove him to his car so he could follow her down to the house. After 20 minutes, they got to the house and went in.
“So how did all that happen?” Karen asked as they sat down on the couch.
“I was looking around and next thing I knew a little kid saw me and when I started signing for him, more people clued in and just gathered around me.”
“You just can’t resist all those little kids.”
“I think it means more to them then the adults. Their faces light up and it’s special.”
“I think you’re special for doing that. It should be fun going to work tomorrow and hear all the talk.”
“I just wonder if it will come out now about us dating.”
“You know what I’m going to leave it to you. I’m fine if people know I just need to know what you want me to tell them.”
“Can you handle what will come with people knowing?”
“If you mean the backlash from your female fans, yes I can. They can say what they want but I know what’s happening between us.”
“Not only the fans, but maybe the press too.”
“It’ll be fine. Besides, I’ll only give the true story to the highest bidder” she said smiling at him.
Sidney reached into his pocket and brought out some money “what’s the rate?”
“Depends on how much information you want to know about?” Sidney pulls out a credit card and hands it to her. Karen holds it and busts out laughing. “What am I, an ATM machine?”
“Well, there is a place I would like to swipe.”
Karen smacked him on his arm “you are perverted you know that?”
Sidney leaned into her “no, I just missed you.”
“What should we do about that?”
“How about we go to your room and let me show you how much?”
Karen kissed him before getting up and walking towards her room. She looked back and saw Sidney still sitting on the couch “should I start without you or are you joining me?”
“I may need a little more persuasion.”
Karen turned completely around and grabbed the hem of her t-shirt and pulled it over her head, throwing it at Sidney before going into the bedroom. Sidney picked up the shirt and got off the couch going to the bedroom. He saw her standing by the bed waiting for him.
“So is this all I get?” holding up the shirt.
“If you want more, you need to come get more.”
Sidney threw the shirt down, shutting the door with his foot and walked over to her. He wrapped his arms around her waist, bringing his lips down to hers. Karen finds the bottom of his shirt and brings it up his chest. They broke their kiss so Karen could remove it completely. She brought her hand back down over his chest and abs, lightly touching the skin. Sidney moved her hand so he could reach down and unbutton her jeans. Karen felt his breath going down her body as he moved down to take off her jeans. Sidney placed kisses up her leg and stopped when he got to her stomach. He smiled into her skin when he heard a giggle escape her lips, realizing he was tickling her. Sidney moved higher and found his spot on her neck. Karen leaned into his mouth and put her arms around him.
“Mmm, I’ve missed what your touch and kisses do to me.”
“You haven’t felt anything yet baby.”
Sidney lifted her up and placed her on the bed. He removed his jeans and boxers before climbing on top of her.
"Um, aren't you forgetting something?" Karen asked as Sidney began his assault on her neck again.
"No, I'm getting turned on more with you just wearing your bra and panties."
"Doesn't that defeat the purpose of what we want to do?"
"Maybe not" Sidney said with a micheivous grin. He left her neck and went towards one of her breasts. He pulled the material down and kissed over it. Sidney lightly sucked on her nipple then blew cool air over it making her back arch and giving him better access. He covered her breast back up and went to do the same to the other one. After Sidney was satisfied, he kissed around her stomach before going back up and attacking her lips. While they were kissing, Karen felt Sidney's hand move to her mound and rub it over the fabric. He moved the material to one side and exposing her swollen lips to him. Sidney rubbed himself over her lips before plunging deep inside of her. Keeping her underwear on, it made it tighter for Sidney to maneuver and it turned them on more. Karen moaned out for him to go harder, which he obliged. Sidney started to pound into her hard as her fingernails scratched up his back. Sidney moaned at the pain but kept going. His thrusts got faster wanting to bring Karen over the edge. Flashback
It was the last day Sidney was at home before leaving to head back to Pittsburgh. He was having dinner at his parents' house when his dad brought up the subject of Karen and breaking it off with her...again.
"Why can't you just see I want what's best for you Sid?"
"Why couldn't you see how happy she makes me? You had dinner with her twice during the playoffs and never gave her the chance."
"I saw how happy she made you, I am not debating that. You're 21 Sid, you have your whole life ahead of you and that life is hockey."
Sidney got up from the table "maybe hockey doesn't have to be my life." He walked out of the dining room and out the door.
Troy got up and walked out after his son "Sidney wait."
"No, I am not going to hear it dad. For the past three weeks, all you did was beat it in my head to break up with her. I love her dad. You do remember what that is? You always told Tay and I stories about how in love you were with mom before you got married. I grew wanting that but hockey always came first. I've got the career in hockey, that part of my life is stable. Let me be happy outside of the arena and let me be with Karen."
"Sid, you love her and I get that, I do. Maybe if you talk to her and just until the season starts, take a break to make sure you can handle everything, if she understands she'll give you that space and be there when the season is well under way."
"I'm not promising anything dad, alright?"
"It's for the best son, you'll see."
Troy patted Sidney on the shoulder and walked back inside. Sidney got in his car and went back to his house to finish packing, with his dad's thoughts still swarming around his head.

A couple hours later, Karen woke up with Sidney still on top of her. She began to rub his back and it made Sidney start to stir. He came to and looked at Karen "sorry baby, didn't mean to fall asleep."
"That's ok, it was nice."
"Yeah it was. Maybe we should get up and find something for dinner before I head back up to Pittsburgh."
"You're not staying with me tonight?" Karen said somewhat disappointed.
"I wasn't planning on it." Karen got out from under Sidney and went to the bathroom, shutting the door "Baby, please let me explain" he said getting up and putting on his boxers.
"Explain then" Karen said from behind the door.
"Will you come out here so I can?"
Karen opened the door and looked at Sidney "what?"
"Baby, I need to go to New York for media day on the 3rd and we leave tomorrow."
"So you can't stay tonight if you're not leaving until tomorrow why?"
"It'll just be easier. Please don't be mad about this."
"I just thought I would get more than a couple hours with you."
"We will have more time together I promise. I just need to take care of this."
"You couldn't have told me this earlier?" she said as her face softened.
"I know I should have but I didn't want to ruin this time for us to be together" he said pulling her into his arms. "We still have 6 hours until you have to go to bed that we can spend together."
"Alright, but you're taking me out to dinner."

Chapter 59
After Karen got dressed, she looked around the bedroom to see if she forgot anything. She looked at Sidney's closet and saw the Rimouski sweatshirt she put on during Sidney's birthday party.
"He won't miss it and if he does, he'll just have to come get it" Karen said to herself as she took it out of the closet. She smiled and folded it as tight as she could and hoped she could get it in her bag before he saw her. Karen took one last look and remembered all that happened in the room. She took a deep breath and left, heading downstairs. When she got to the bottom, she saw Sidney was still in the kitchen and she practically ran to the living room and opened her bag fast and stuck the sweatshirt inside. Karen smiled as she zipped up the bag and Sidney came in with a plate and two glasses.
"I was just about to call you baby."
"I got everything from upstairs."
"You probably got my sweatshirt too."
Karen stood there stunned "what are you talking about?"
Sidney walked over to the bag and unzipped it, pulling out his sweatshirt from Rimouski and holding it up "this sweatshirt."
"Where did that come from?" she said playing along.
"Baby, if you want to take it back with you it's fine. I know its in perfect hands."
"How did you know I had it?" Karen asked smiling.
"I heard you come down and then you ran in here, so I figured you were taking something of mine" Sidney said pulling her into his arms.
"You really don't mind?"
"No I don't baby. Besides, if I want it, I know exactly where it is."
"What if I'm wearing it when you want it back?"
"Then I won't hesitate to take it off you" Sidney said leaning down to kiss her. They broke apart and sat down to eat.
Twenty minutes later, they were heading for the airport. Sidney held Karen's hand while she looked out the window. Karen tried to will herself not to cry and that this goodbye was not going to be like when Sidney left. Yes, she was sad to be leaving him but he would be back in a few weeks and staying around after.
"You ok baby?" Sidney asked looking at her.
"Yeah."
"Do you want to make it a little more convincing?"
"I'm ok Sid. Yes, I'm sad to leave but I just keep telling myself you'll be back before I know it."
Sidney lifted her hand to his lips and kissed the back of it, getting a smile from her "it'll be ok this time."
"I know. I won't get all hysterical this time, I promise."
"Maybe it's my turn."
"Well I won't tell anyone if you do stud."
They continued to the airport in silence but it was a good silence. After another 30 minutes, Sidney pulls into the parking lot at the airport and got Karen's bag. Karen grabbed her carry on bag and they walked into the airport hand in hand. Karen got checked in and they allowed Sidney to go with her to the gate. She just laughed at that because one, there was no security like in Pittsburgh and two, they really weren't going to deny him access. Karen never cared what fame he brought to the relationship but was happy this time for it. They got through security and headed for the gate Karen was leaving from.
"Will you watch my bag while I run to the bathroom?"
"Of course baby."
Karen gave Sidney her bag and headed to the bathroom. When she came back a few minutes later, Karen saw Sidney sitting there with his head down and a blank stare on his face. Karen walked over and sat down beside him, putting her hand on his back.
"My turn to ask now, you ok?"
"Yeah why?"
"You look lost."
"I'm just thinking that if you did what my mom wanted, today would be ending very differently."
"I like this ending better."
"Me too" Sidney said looking at her and smiling making her smile back. A few minutes later, they began to call the passengers for boarding. Karen stood up as did Sidney. They just looked at each other and Sidney pulled her into a hug. They held onto each other until Karen heard the final boarding call.
"You better go baby."
"I know. Thank you for my week, I didn't want to be anywhere else."
"I wouldn't have wanted you anywhere else. I love you baby."
"I love you too stud."
They both smiled at their nicknames for each other. Sidney leaned in for a kiss and when Karen pulled back she saw the tears in his eyes.
"Ma'am, we need you to board" said one of the gate attendents.
Karen just nodded and picked up her bag. She brought her hand up and caressed Sidney's cheek before smiling at him and walking to the doorway. As she handed her ticket to the woman, Karen looked back to Sidney and mouthed 'I love you'. She saw him say the same and she left to get on the plane. As Karen took her seat by the window, she could see the terminal and Sidney standing by the window. She smiled and put her hand on the window hoping he saw her. Sidney watched the plane taxi away from the terminal and left when he couldn't see it anymore. Karen wiped her eyes and closed them as the plane took off and she was actually leaving him. Sidney got back to his car, sitting in the drivers seat for a minute. He was about to start the car when his phone rang.
"Hey dad" Sidney said after seeing who was calling.
"Did Karen get off ok?"
"Yeah, she did."
"Did you do it?"
"No dad, I didn't."
"Sid..."
"Look, I'm not getting into this right now. She's gone and I'm heading home. I'll talk to you tomorrow."
Sidney hung up and threw his phone on the passenger seat. He couldn't believe his dad would do this to him, especially right now.
Flashback
Sidney was talking with his parents after they came back from lunch and Karen went outside. His mom and dad wouldn't let up about breaking it off with her before she left.
"Sid, its the best thing to do here."
"The best for who dad? Why can't you guys be happy that I found someone that balances my life."
"She may balance it now Sidney, but what happens when it falls apart and your game suffers?"
"My game won't suffer mom."
"It's obvious that she isn't going to take my advice, but you need to."
"Your mother's right son, end it now and when you get back in a few weeks you can concentrate on what you need to."
That was the last thing said before they left and Sidney went outside to find Karen. He wasn't about to let what they said bother him and only needed to concentrate on Karen for the next few hours.

Sidney shook the thoughts from his head and drove home wondering what he was going to do.
Karen finally landed in Pittsburgh. She found her car and drove to the house. She decided to stay at the house and drive down to Wheeling later in the day. Karen was exhausted and left her bag in the car, planning on getting it after she woke up. She locked up and went to bed, thinking of Sidney and replaying her week with him.
About 10am, Karen woke up and laid in bed for a few minutes before getting up. She heard her cell phone go off and she found it on the bedside table, picking it up and answering it.
"Hello."
"Morning baby. Did I wake you?"
"No, I just woke up actually. I didn't have anyone beside me to stay cuddled up to."
"How come?"
"My boyfriend had to leave a few hours ago."
"Ah, anyone I know?"
"Nah, he's just some stand in guy I keep around when my hot hockey stud can't be with me."
"Well, you better get your time with him now because when the hockey stud returns in a few weeks, he won't be coming around anymore."
"Fair enough" Karen giggled into the phone "I missed you last night when I fell asleep."
"I missed you too. Woke up and found myself holding onto my pillow. I think I missed holding you during the night and I grabbed the nearest thing."
"Did you go work out this morning?"
"Not yet, kind of heading there now. I just needed to hear your voice before I started my day."
"Aw, baby. Well, you go get your work out in and know that I love you and that I am counting down the days until I see you again."
"I love you too and definitely can't wait until I get back. Talk to you soon baby, bye."
"Bye stud."
They hung up and Karen laid there smiling before she got up. She got dressed and went to her car to get her bag so she could wash her clothes. Karen brought her bag into the living room and opened it up, sorting out her clothes. She picked up Sidney's sweatshirt and brought up to her nose and smelled it. She loved how it smelled like him. She put it down and emptied out the rest of the bag. When she did, Karen found a manilla envelope in the bottom of the bag and picked it up, opening it. She smiled when she saw the pictures of Sidney from his Reebok photo shoot. As she flipped through them, Karen stopped on the next picture and put the rest of them down. It was the pictures of them that the photographer took at Sidney's request. She carefully examined all three of them and smiled remembering that day. Her smiled turned to tears welling up in her eyes when she saw the fourth picture. Karen saw them standing facing each other and Sidney's lips on her forehead. Karen remembered the feeling in her heart when he did that, she just didn't know the photographer snapped it. She grabbed her phone and called Sidney, getting his voicemail. She left him a message and then hung up, grabbing her clothes and taking them to the laundry room.
Sidney heard his phone go off, but left it alone since he was on the leg press machine. After he got done, he got a drink of water and opened his phone, playing the voicemail.
Hey stud. I found an envelope of pictures in my bag and wanted to tell you thank you. I forgive for lying to me and telling me you didn't get them so I could be surprised. I think I'm going to blow my favorite one up and hang it on my ceiling. Something sexy to look at until you get back. You are too sweet to me and I love you. Bye baby.
Sidney just smiled and hung up, putting his phone away and getting back to his work out.
A few hours later, Karen was driving to Wheeling since she needed to go to work tomorrow. She got to Maggie's house and brought her stuff in. She decided to stay in Wheeling for the next couple of weeks since Sidney was still gone and there wasn't a need to go to the house right now. Maggie heard her come in, going to see her.
"Hey, you're back."
"Yeah, can't stay away from work forever."
"I don't see how you can stay away from Sidney for that long either. You must be glutton for punishment."
"I think I am. I miss him so much Mags and I only left him yesterday."
"I know you do, but he'll be back soon enough and then I will hear nonstop about him."
"Maybe not."
"What do you mean?"
"I kind of told him that if he wanted to, he could spend more time at my house which means, I might be spending more time at my house with him and commuting to work."
"YOU ASKED HIM TO MOVE IN WITH YOU? Are you nuts girl?"
"Not really move in with me. I told him if he wanted a little more peace and quiet to get ready for home games, he could stay at the house until he had to leave to be at the arena. But I did tell him that on weeks they had a home stance, I would stay up there with him. Its a small step we're taking."
"So you'll still be here every now and again?"
"Yes Mags. I'm not going to abandon you completely. Maybe I want to see if this is going where I think it is."
"Where do you want it to go? Living together full time? Marriage?"
"I don't know" Karen said with some sadness to her voice.
"Did something happen?"
"I knew his dad didn't like me and when I first met his mom, we hit it off great. But the next time we saw each other she told me to break it off with Sidney before I left to come home. I didn't but I can't shake the feeling that something is going to happen when he gets back."
"Karen, he loves you. Everyone sees it. His parents just want him to focus on his career right now. You have nothing to worry about, ok?"
"Yeah ok. I just miss him and its like part of my heart is gone until he comes back to make it whole again. I don't want to lose him Mags."
"Damn girl, you got it bad."
"Too bad I know. How about some dinner, my treat?"
"How can I turn down an offer like that. Let me change and I will be right back."
Karen waited as Maggie changed and then they went out to eat. Karen told her all about Nova Scotia and what all they did. After they got done eating, they headed back to the house and lounged around. Karen showed her the pictures before going to bed and back to the working grind.

"Look, I'm not getting into this right now. She's gone and I'm heading home. I'll talk to you tomorrow."
Sidney hung up and threw his phone on the passenger seat. He couldn't believe his dad would do this to him, especially right now.

Sidney was talking with his parents after they came back from lunch and Karen went outside. His mom and dad wouldn't let up about breaking it off with her before she left.
"Sid, its the best thing to do here."
"The best for who dad? Why can't you guys be happy that I found someone that balances my life."
"She may balance it now Sidney, but what happens when it falls apart and your game suffers?"
"My game won't suffer mom."
"It's obvious that she isn't going to take my advice, but you need to."
"Your mother's right son, end it now and when you get back in a few weeks you can concentrate on what you need to."
That was the last thing said before they left and Sidney went outside to find Karen. He wasn't about to let what they said bother him and only needed to concentrate on Karen for the next few hours.

Sidney shook the thoughts from his head and drove home wondering what he was going to do.
Karen finally landed in Pittsburgh. She found her car and drove to the house. She decided to stay at the house and drive down to Wheeling later in the day. Karen was exhausted and left her bag in the car, planning on getting it after she woke up. She locked up and went to bed, thinking of Sidney and replaying her week with him.
About 10am, Karen woke up and laid in bed for a few minutes before getting up. She heard her cell phone go off and she found it on the bedside table, picking it up and answering it.
"Hello."
"Morning baby. Did I wake you?"
"No, I just woke up actually. I didn't have anyone beside me to stay cuddled up to."
"How come?"
"My boyfriend had to leave a few hours ago."
"Ah, anyone I know?"
"Nah, he's just some stand in guy I keep around when my hot hockey stud can't be with me."
"Well, you better get your time with him now because when the hockey stud returns in a few weeks, he won't be coming around anymore."
"Fair enough" Karen giggled into the phone "I missed you last night when I fell asleep."
"I missed you too. Woke up and found myself holding onto my pillow. I think I missed holding you during the night and I grabbed the nearest thing."
"Did you go work out this morning?"
"Not yet, kind of heading there now. I just needed to hear your voice before I started my day."
"Aw, baby. Well, you go get your work out in and know that I love you and that I am counting down the days until I see you again."
"I love you too and definitely can't wait until I get back. Talk to you soon baby, bye."
"Bye stud."
They hung up and Karen laid there smiling before she got up. She got dressed and went to her car to get her bag so she could wash her clothes. Karen brought her bag into the living room and opened it up, sorting out her clothes. She picked up Sidney's sweatshirt and brought up to her nose and smelled it. She loved how it smelled like him. She put it down and emptied out the rest of the bag. When she did, Karen found a manilla envelope in the bottom of the bag and picked it up, opening it. She smiled when she saw the pictures of Sidney from his Reebok photo shoot. As she flipped through them, Karen stopped on the next picture and put the rest of them down. It was the pictures of them that the photographer took at Sidney's request. She carefully examined all three of them and smiled remembering that day. Her smiled turned to tears welling up in her eyes when she saw the fourth picture. Karen saw them standing facing each other and Sidney's lips on her forehead. Karen remembered the feeling in her heart when he did that, she just didn't know the photographer snapped it. She grabbed her phone and called Sidney, getting his voicemail. She left him a message and then hung up, grabbing her clothes and taking them to the laundry room.
Sidney heard his phone go off, but left it alone since he was on the leg press machine. After he got done, he got a drink of water and opened his phone, playing the voicemail.
Hey stud. I found an envelope of pictures in my bag and wanted to tell you thank you. I forgive for lying to me and telling me you didn't get them so I could be surprised. I think I'm going to blow my favorite one up and hang it on my ceiling. Something sexy to look at until you get back. You are too sweet to me and I love you. Bye baby.
Sidney just smiled and hung up, putting his phone away and getting back to his work out.
A few hours later, Karen was driving to Wheeling since she needed to go to work tomorrow. She got to Maggie's house and brought her stuff in. She decided to stay in Wheeling for the next couple of weeks since Sidney was still gone and there wasn't a need to go to the house right now. Maggie heard her come in, going to see her.
"Hey, you're back."
"Yeah, can't stay away from work forever."
"I don't see how you can stay away from Sidney for that long either. You must be glutton for punishment."
"I think I am. I miss him so much Mags and I only left him yesterday."
"I know you do, but he'll be back soon enough and then I will hear nonstop about him."

"I kind of told him that if he wanted to, he could spend more time at my house which means, I might be spending more time at my house with him and commuting to work."
"YOU ASKED HIM TO MOVE IN WITH YOU? Are you nuts girl?"
"Not really move in with me. I told him if he wanted a little more peace and quiet to get ready for home games, he could stay at the house until he had to leave to be at the arena. But I did tell him that on weeks they had a home stance, I would stay up there with him. Its a small step we're taking."
"So you'll still be here every now and again?"
"Yes Mags. I'm not going to abandon you completely. Maybe I want to see if this is going where I think it is."
"Where do you want it to go? Living together full time? Marriage?"
"I don't know" Karen said with some sadness to her voice.
"Did something happen?"
"I knew his dad didn't like me and when I first met his mom, we hit it off great. But the next time we saw each other she told me to break it off with Sidney before I left to come home. I didn't but I can't shake the feeling that something is going to happen when he gets back."
"Karen, he loves you. Everyone sees it. His parents just want him to focus on his career right now. You have nothing to worry about, ok?"
"Yeah ok. I just miss him and its like part of my heart is gone until he comes back to make it whole again. I don't want to lose him Mags."
"Damn girl, you got it bad."
"Too bad I know. How about some dinner, my treat?"
"How can I turn down an offer like that. Let me change and I will be right back."
Karen waited as Maggie changed and then they went out to eat. Karen told her all about Nova Scotia and what all they did. After they got done eating, they headed back to the house and lounged around. Karen showed her the pictures before going to bed and back to the working grind.

Karen smiled and got out of his grip, getting up. She grabbed his hand and pulled him to her, making him follow her into the living room. Karen pushed Sidney down on the couch and straddled his legs.

"I figured you would" she said kissing him.
Sidney felt her hand on him, massaging him with the right amount of pressure until he was hard. Karen sat up as Sidney held himself for her to slide down on him. "That's ok. We weren't sure if you'd be home yet from taking Karen to the airport" Troy said confused seeing Karen standing there.
"My flight isn't until 8p."
"We were just spending time together before she had to leave."
"Well, how about you two go get dressed and we'll all go out for lunch?" Trina suggested.
"Baby?" Sidney ask carefully.
"Sounds good" she said smiling at him.
"Give us a few minutes to change and we will be right down" Sidney said as they headed upstairs. Once they were in the room, Sidney grabbed her "sorry about that baby."
Karen just smiled before she kissed him "we needed a break anyway stud." She got away from him and grabbed her clothes and started changing. Sidney did the same and then headed downstairs as Karen put on some make up and fixed her hair. When she was done, she met them and they were on their way out.
They got to the restaurant and got seated away from everyone. Karen wondered how this was going to go. She was happy that she hadn't seen much of them since Sidney's birthday and was happy when she thought she would get to leave without seeing them too. But since they were seated in a booth, Sidney kept his arm around Karen's shoulders and his other hand had her hand under the table, resting on his thigh.
"Are you happy to be going back Karen?" Troy said starting off the conversation.
"Well every vacation needs to end sometime and I do need to get back to work. You guys should be happy that I'm finally leaving though." Karen felt Sidney squeeze her hand and she just looked at him, who in return just kissed her forehead.
"We were hoping to not get into that today Karen" Trina said.
"I just figured we'd get it out in the open early so we could enjoy lunch better."
"Well now that you brought it up, with you leaving Sidney can find time to get his workouts in."
"I have gotten my workouts in dad. Every morning since my birthday, well except for today. I haven't been slacking off and will be ready for training camp in a month."
"You just won't have any distractions now to really push yourself."
Karen just stayed quiet and squeezed his hand. Their food soon came and they began to eat. Karen let Sidney and his parents talk not really adding anything to the conversation, which suited her just fine. After lunch, they headed back to Sidney's and his parents decided to stay for a little bit. Karen laughed to herself knowing they had to have planned that and went outside to sit on the lounge chair by the lake. An hour later, Sidney came out and practically fell onto her lap.
"I take it they finally left?"
"Yes and why did you leave me alone with them? I could have made an excuse to get rid of them earlier if you were with me."
"You could have just told them what we were going to do most of the day today."
"Yeah, they wouldn't have left. More like they would have made the excuse to stay around until you had to leave. Of course, I guess I could have just started to kiss you and take your clothes off. That could have gotten them to leave."

"Um, no. I'm comfortable where I am."

"All the pictures from the whole shoot are in there but I did make a second set of you two together. Figured you'd want to give her a set too."
"That was nice, thanks. When will the commercial air?"
"Probably next month, during the preseason or before. That part isn't up to me. Alright, I need to go and sorry if I bothered you."
"It was fine, thanks again for bringing these over." Sidney said goodbye and went back inside. He walked into the living room and put his envelope down, opening the one for Karen. He saw the pictures of him and flipped through looking for the ones of them together. He found them and smiled at how they were together. He got to the last one where they were facing each other and his lips were on her forehead with her eyes closed. Sidney smiled and knew that picture spoke a thousand words. He put them back in the envelope and wondered how he could put them in her bag without her knowing so she wouldn't see them until she got home. Sidney put it on the table and headed back upstairs to Karen.
"Who was at the door?"
